Travis Ericksen, MA, LPC

Travis Ericksen, MA, LPCI think the shortest verse in the Bible is also the most profound. John 11:35 states that “Jesus wept.” Although only two words, I believe this verse paints the most amazing picture of God’s compassion for us. What strikes me is that while Jesus was on his way to raise Lazarus from the dead, he was so moved by the grief and suffering of others that he stopped and joined them in their mourning. He could have jumped right to the problem-solving end of the story, raised Lazarus from the dead and alleviated everybody’s grief and suffering. Instead, he first joined them in their pain. What Jesus was demonstrating is that healing begins with empathy, the ability to accurately understand and feel another person’s pain and experiences.
